Prasad Upasani

Prasad Upasani is a Hindustani Vocal Classical musician, teacher and performer, who is also a talented software IT professional. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in music (Sangeet Visharad), in addition to a Bachelor’s Degree in Electronics Engineering and a Master’s degree in Computer Science.

Born into a musical family (his mother Smt Sita Upasani is the niece of the renowned musician, late Pt Chidanand Nagarkar), Prasad was initiated into music by his father, Shri Raja Upasani, who is also an engineer and a musician. Prasad's formal music training began at the age of six when he was placed under the tutelage of renowned musicians and teachers Pt. S.C.R. Bhat and Pt. K.G. Ginde who are recognized as among the foremost musicologists of modern times. Prasad was fortunate to have had intense training from his gurus for more than 25 years. As a result, his music is rich with the pristine purity for which their guru-parampara is well-known.

Prasad gave his first public performance at the age of 11 at Bombay's Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s music festival. He has since performed at various prestigious music venues in India as well as abroad. He currently resides in the US where he has been regularly teaching and performing for more than 30 years.

In recent years Prasad has combined his twin passions for music and technology to create a highly revolutionary and successful line of music apps (iTanpura, iTablaPro, and iLehra) for iPhones and iPads. These apps have been received enthusiastically by music professionals, teachers and students alike as well as by Bollywood, Hollywood and other western musicians. In 2016, Prasad was awarded the “Pt. Vinayakrao Patwardhan Smruti Jeevan Gaurav Puraskar” by Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Pune recognizing his contribution to the music world.
